Where's the Dad?
I only have a few minutes to write about a topic that bothers me: the notion that dads do not participate in caring for young children. I know many dads who take very active roles in their children's lives (and not just during playtime). Jay is a wonderful father who enjoys spending time with Henley. He and I recently purchased Playtex's "The First Lil' Gripper Twist 'n Click Straw Cup" for Henley after she began to show interest in sipping water from a straw. She loves the cup, and I do, too; however, I do not like what was written on the packaging material for the cup. Here's a link to a picture of one of the Playtex cups in its package: http://www.playtexstore.com/cgi-bin/item/PLA05908. Notice that the package says, "Mom Squeeze here!" The features are listed on the back of the package and state that the cup was designed for child and mom (along with the reasons for each). There is no mention of dad anywhere on the package. Is it so unreasonable to think that a dad might help his child learn to drink from a straw? Instead of writing "Mom" multiple times on the package, couldn't Playtex have written "Parent" instead?
